Choosing a Pediatrician
September 18, 2021
For many parents, choosing a pediatrician is an endeavor that is not taken lightly. This doctor is going to be a large part of your child’s life from birth through early adulthood. Therefore, you want to choose a practice that is the perfect fit for your child and your family.
Choosing a Pediatrician: When and Where to Begin
Most parents begin the search for a pediatrician while their child is still in utero. During this time, we suggest parents take the time to research, tour, and meet with the practices that they are considering. It is always a good idea to look at several different practices in order to get a feel for the environment you prefer. It is important to take availability, location, and the culture of the practice into consideration.
Referrals from friends and family, as well as an internet search based on location, is a great place to start your search. You want a pediatrician that not only makes you and your child comfortable, but that is also convenient when sickness or an urgent situation strikes. These factors are important to keep in mind as you complete your research and interviews.
Ask Questions
When interviewing a pediatric practice, be sure to ask questions in order to get a feel for the practice and their policies. Before your office tour, compile a list of questions to bring with you. Questions to ask include:
- How are sick visits handled? Can I make a same day appointment?
- What do I do if my child is sick after hours or I need to speak with the doctor once the office is closed?
- What are the office policies for cancellations, billing, and insurance?
- Is the doctor board certified? What qualifications and training do they have?
