Whether you are a stay-at-home parent, work outside of the home, or work from home, the challenge is the same. How do you fill the long summer days while the kids are out of school? The answer: create a summer bucket list. Jot down everything and anything you hope to do in the season ahead. If your children are old enough, this is a great activity to do as a family.

With your summer bucket list complete, post it somewhere prominent where it can’t be ignored. Not only will your bucket list serve as a perfect reminder of all the activities you want to do, it will also be there as inspiration for those do-nothing days that always seem to crop up.

To help get you started, here are some ideas from our summer bucket list:

Dance in the Moonlight

Load up the kids, lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic dinner for the Summer Outdoor Music and Movies Series at Apex Nature Park Amphitheatre. The event is free and open to the public. View the schedule at ApexNC.org.

Catch a Flick

Regals Cinemas’ popular Summer Movie Express series is back for 2019. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays from June 18 through August 14, watch your favorite kids movies for just $1. This is a great way to beat the heat or escape from summer showers. Check out the full schedule of movies playing here.

Cast a Line

On July 4th, 2019, you can fish for free, with no fishing license, at any public body of water in the state of North Carolina. Many locations offer free loaner equipment. Even though you won’t need a license, all other rules and regulations apply so be sure to read them before you go.

Celebrate July 5th

Head over to Jefferson L. Sugg Farm at Bass Lake Park for a traditional celebration of America’s birthday the day after Independence Day. Enjoy fireworks, food vendors, inflatables, rides, face painting and more. Admission is free. For more information, visit the Town of Holly Springs events page.

Go on a Road Trip

Summer is the perfect time to get out and explore. Pack up the car, grab snacks and hit the road. Head east to Wrightsville Beach or Carolina Beach for a seaside getaway or if you’re seeking a little more adventure, head southwest to explore Uwharrie National Forest.

Curl Up with a Good Book

The Holly Springs Community Library is hosting Summer @ The Library, a family reading challenged to help keep the whole family engaged in reading throughout the summer. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories. To get you started, they put together recommended reading lists for kids, adults and teens.

Visit a New Museum

With more than a dozen interactive exhibits, we love Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh. They also have some great play at home resources available for download on their website. Other relatively nearby favorites in the Triangle include the North Carolina Museum of History, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh Fire Museum, and the Museum of Life + Science.

Your summer bucket list doesn’t have to be extravagant. Mix in some seasonal traditions like making s’mores over a campfire, having a water balloon fight, or inviting friends over for a cookout.

If the thought of making yet another to do list overwhelms you, try the reverse. Add your activities and adventures to a running list after you have already done them. At the end of summer, you’ll have a wonderful list of all the memories that you made to reflect on without all the pressure of checking items off your bucket list.

Wherever the summer takes you, Holly Springs Pediatrics is here for you. If your child needs a physical exam to attend camp or participate in a sport, is feeling under the weather, or is due for his or her next well visit, call (919) 249-4700 to schedule an appointment.
